Building Belonging

Make sure to check out the Summer Your City currently hitting mailboxes for all the latest city news and updates, including how Beaverton is creating inclusive spaces. This issue also includes a complimentary 'I’m a Welcomer' sign. Snap a photo with the sign and share it on social media using the hashtag #BeavertonWelcomes.

Throughout summer, we’ll be sharing how the city is striving toward Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) with highlights of current programs and events.

We recently launched the Belonging Speaker Series intended to promote a deep sense of belonging, understanding, and connection within the community.

Our first Speaker Series was held in May and focused on New Year traditions with one participant sharing “Thank you for putting together such a wonderful panel. I look forward to future opportunities to meet our neighbors. Dates for future events will be announced soon.” and dates for future events will be announced soon.

The city will be hosting roundtable discussions with community members as part of a multicultural gap analysis to learn more about the barriers preventing people from fully integrating and thriving within the city. Roundtable discussion participation promotion will launch in July.

Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Budget in Effect

Earlier this year, we also announced rate increases as part of a ten-year investment to improve our community’s water infrastructure, ensuring that your water is safe and clean.

A public hearing to consider these changes is scheduled for the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 17 at 6 p.m. If approved, the new rates will go into effect July 1, 2025.

The proposed bill changes include new uniform water rates for all customers; new tiered water rates for residential customers that establishes different water prices based on consumption to encourage equity and conservation; and new sewer and stormwater rates for all customers.

New Utility Rates Began July 1

We also want to remind utility customers that new water, sewer, and stormwater rates are in effect beginning July 1 to pay for necessary once-in-a-generation investments to ensure water stays flowing as demands increase or in response to a major emergency. The new water rates, part of a 10-year investment plan, include new uniform water, sewer, and stormwater rates for all customers. Contact Utility Billing at utilitybilling@BeavertonOregon.gov or 503-526-2257 with questions about your bill and payment assistance options.

Community Survey Headed Your Way

This summer, Beaverton will launch a National Community Survey to help us make important plans for our future. Randomly selected households will receive survey invitations this summer — if you receive an invite, please follow the instructions to share your input. The purpose of the survey is to gather feedback on a variety of topics at once to help us inform strategic planning, program design, budgeting and resources, and understand how different community members and neighborhoods feel about important topics. If you aren’t randomly selected for the initial survey, stay tuned for a community-wide survey later this summer to share your feedback. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Neighborhood Association Committee Spotlight: Erik Lehr

Each month, we shine a light on a dedicated volunteer making a difference in our community. This month, we’re proud to feature Erik Lehr, who is currently a member of the Neighbors Southwest Neighborhood Association Committee.

Erik became interested in volunteering after seeing a city notice on a sign in his neighborhood. His journey as a volunteer began as a member of the Five Oaks/Triple Creek in the summer of 2018. He moved to a board member position that December. He has also served on the Urban Renewal Advisory Committee, the Urban Renewal Advisory Budget Committee, and the Beaverton Committee for Community Involvement. One of his favorite memories was touring the Public Safety Center because it was fun, interesting, and a great way to connect with the Beaverton Police Department and get an understanding of their day-to-day work.

He said he has been continually impressed with the dedication, professionalism, and friendliness of both city staff and elected officials.

Describing himself as a person who needs some sleep and has very little free time, Erik continues to bring commitment to his volunteer work. Outside of his Neighborhood Association Committee role, you can find him enjoying a scuba dive as he has for the last 25 years. As a certified advanced open water diver, he said scuba diving is a great experience and would recommend it to anyone.

Thank you, Erik, for your commitment to building a more connected Beaverton!

News You Can Use

From Debate to Dialogue Workshop is August 2

Join us at our From Debate to Dialogue workshop from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 at Beaverton City Library Main.

Our community has become so polarized that we rarely have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with people who hold different views. If we do get the chance, the exchange often becomes a shouting match. Dialogue offers a different approach. Instead of a debate with two sides speaking from their positions, dialogue invites participants to share their personal experiences, values, emotions, and even hesitations. Dialogue uncovers complexity and cultivates connection.

Through dialogue, we aim to challenge our assumptions and arrive at a deeper understanding of our conversation partner, and ourselves. It can even be fun!

In this interactive workshop, participants will:

  • Gain insight into their own cognitive and emotional processes
  • Practice strategies for navigating heated exchanges
  • Learn to share their views in a way that can be heard
  • Discover the joys of dialogue!

We will also have an optional second session from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 for participants to practice the skills they learned at the first session.

Oregon Recycling System is Getting an Upgrade

Oregon is hitting refresh on recycling — and for the first time, companies that make and sell packaging and paper products will help cover the cost. Thanks to the state’s Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act, Oregon is building a cleaner, more consistent, and fairer recycling system.

Over the next few years, we’ll see:

  • Improvements to recycling sorting equipment
  • Smarter tracking systems for recycling
  • Expanded access to recycling for more than 150,000 households across Oregon
  • New drop-off centers for hard-to recycle items

All recycling processors will be held to stronger standards: tracking where materials go, following health and safety rules, and paying fair wages. These changes mean you can recycle with greater confidence.

Oregon has long been a recycling leader — and together, we’re building a system that works better for everyone. Want to do your part?
