Summer Reading is Back? Are You In?
Don’t miss all the fun going on weekly at Beaverton City Library.
The Summer Reading program runs through Friday, August 15 for kids, teens, and adults.
When kids from birth through grade 5 and teens in grades 6-12 count the hours read, listen to someone reading, or do family activities they can earn a free book. Reading logs are available from the library or keep track of time on your own. Kids and teens who complete 15 hours can come to the library to choose their free book from Saturday, July 5 through Friday, August 15.
Adult Summer Reading participants can Read for Refuge by tracking their hours read to earn donations for Safe Route Immigration — a program providing accessible legal services to refugees and immigrants in Beaverton. For every 1,500 hours read collectively, the Friends of the Beaverton City Library will donate $100 dollars to Safe Route Immigration. Adults can submit their reading hours online or in person at the main library or the Murray Scholls branch and be entered into weekly prize drawings.

Utility Rate Public Hearing is June 17
Earlier this year, we also announced rate increases as part of a ten-year investment to improve our community’s water infrastructure, ensuring that your water is safe and clean.
A public hearing to consider these changes is scheduled for the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 17 at 6 p.m. If approved, the new rates will go into effect July 1, 2025.
The proposed bill changes include new uniform water rates for all customers; new tiered water rates for residential customers that establishes different water prices based on consumption to encourage equity and conservation; and new sewer and stormwater rates for all customers.

Neighborhood Association Committee Spotlight: Angelica Guevara
Each month, we shine a light on a dedicated volunteer making a difference in our community. This month, we’re proud to feature Angelica Guevara, the board chair of the Vose Neighborhood Association Committee.
Angelica began her journey as a volunteer in March 2023, when she joined the Vose Neighborhood Association Committee. Since then, she’s taken on a leadership role, helping to guide neighborhood initiatives and build stronger community connections. One of her favorite memories is the 2023 Vose Summer Neighborhood Picnic, an event that brought neighbors together for fun and fellowship.
Describing herself as caring, sociable, and optimistic, Angelica brings warmth and energy to her volunteer work. Outside of her Neighborhood Association Committee role, she enjoys reading as many books as possible and finds peace in listening to the sounds of the night—especially during snowstorms.
Thank you, Angelica, for your commitment to building a more connected Beaverton!

Be Climate Smart When the Heat Rises With These Tips
Hot days are becoming more common — and they’re a sign of our changing climate.
Here are a few climate-smart ways to adapt and take action when the temperature rises:
- Use large appliances (like laundry machines and dishwashers) early or late to reduce peak energy strain.
- Switch to fans instead of air conditioning when possible —they use about 10 times less energy.
- If you use air conditioning, keep it running at a consistent temperature. Turning it off and on can consume more energy than maintaining a steady setting.
- Plant a tree or learn about our local shade initiatives to cool neighborhoods long-term.
- Talk to neighbors about cooling resources — especially those without stable housing or air conditioning.
